Direct-fed Microbial (DFM) Products
In all animal production, healthy animals with optimal feed utilization is a main objective for profitability. Growth rate, feed conversion, and many diseases are closely connected with the overall function of the gastrointestinal system. To inhibit problem-causing bacteria responsible for disturbances in the GI tract, antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents have been used as feed additives for many years. Direct-fed microbial products are
feed supplements that contain viable, naturally-occuring
microorganisms. When live microorganisms are added to a
supplement or feed additive, a guarantee of those viable cells usually
appears on the label. Generally, these microorganisms
are lactic acid-producing bacteria (LAB). Thus, they produce
lactic acid as an endproduct of fermentation, the process that occurs
as these bacteria utilize substrates (energy sources, such as
carbohydrates, and proteins). Other microbial contributions
include the production of
vitamins and organic acids, some of which may be further utilized by
